bucket-hat-great-wave
Bucket Hat 'Great Wave' - 神奈川県

The Great Wave, embroidered as a frieze

The Great Wave off Kanagawa (神奈川沖浪裏, Kanagawa-oki Nami-ura) is the most reproduced print in the world. Published around 1831 by Katsushika Hokusai as part of his Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, it shows a monumental wave about to come down on three oshiokuri-bune fishing boats, with Fuji itself reduced to a small triangle in the background. That reversal of scale — the wave apparently larger than the sacred mountain — is what gives the image its force.

Hokusai used a Prussian blue newly imported from the Netherlands through Dejima, the port at Nagasaki that was the only Western trading post permitted during the sakoku years of isolation. The synthetic German pigment held its color far better than the plant indigo Japanese printers had been using, which is why the series has kept its intensity for nearly two centuries without shifting. The original run is thought to have reached around 8,000 impressions between 1830 and 1832; only a few dozen early, well-preserved sheets survive.

The rectangular patch takes the wave into a horizontal frieze: clawed white foam along the crest, a mass of blue and turquoise water beneath, stylized cloud above, in a palette that answers the ukiyo-e original. The elongated format follows the decorative friezes of byōbu screens and emakimono painted scrolls rather than the usual centred crop.

The mid-profile bucket shape deepens the blue and white by contrast. Wear it with a heavyweight white tee, swim or linen shorts and sandals for resort wear, or with an oversized navy sweatshirt and straight jeans in colder months. The brim is welcome on the coast. Made for people who collect Japanese art, for surfers who know the print, and for anyone who has spent a day at Kamakura or Enoshima.

98% cotton, 2% elastane

Mid profile, 7.5 cm (3 in) brim

One size: 54.9-60 cm (21.6-23.6 in)

Soft inner lining

Flat seams and clean finishing
