The name is short for \u003cem\u003enikka-pokka\u003c\/em\u003e, the Japanese rendering of knickerbockers, and the shape is unmistakable: a leg that balloons out from the hip and gathers tight at the ankle. On a scaffold the volume has a purpose. The loose cloth brushes against an obstacle before the body does, it leaves the knees free to crouch and climb, and the closed ankle keeps the hem from catching. Over the years the silhouette left the building site and became one of the signatures of Japanese streetwear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis pair keeps the outline and softens the fabric. The leg is full from the hip to the calf, with a front pleat that lets the cloth fall in a clean curve, then closes into an elastic cuff at the ankle. The cuff holds the volume above the shoe, which is why nikka pants look best over high-top sneakers or chunky soles. A drawstring waist replaces the belt, and two side pockets sit along the seam.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cloth is a fine-ribbed corduroy with a brushed fleece backing, made for fall and winter. The ribs catch the light as the leg moves, which gives plain colors more depth than a flat work twill.
