The haori that frames cranes against a single red sun
This is the classic done properly. The Japanese haori works a black ground with the most enduring images in the country's art — cranes in flight, a single red sun, branches of white and pink sakura drifting across the fabric. Nothing is overdesigned; it leans on motifs that have meant longevity, renewal and good fortune for centuries, and lets them breathe.
The restraint is what makes it. The red sun gives the back a clear anchor, the cranes spread their wings around it, and the sakura scatters across the shoulders and sleeves so the print carries all the way round. It's elegant rather than loud — the kind of pattern that reads as considered up close and graceful from across a room.
Being an open-front haori, it's made to drape and layer rather than close. The light fabric falls cleanly, the wide three-quarter sleeves hold the kimono silhouette, and worn open the black ground frames whatever sits underneath. There's nothing to fasten — you wear it loose, and it moves as you do.
Black is the easiest base colour there is, which makes this one a genuine workhorse. A white tee underneath makes the red sun and cranes pop; an all-black outfit turns it into a quiet, tonal statement. It crosses from casual to smart without effort — jeans one day, tailored trousers the next.
This is for the person who wants the timeless version — cranes, sun and blossom, handled with restraint — in a layer that goes with everything. Wear it open over a tee with denim or trousers and minimal shoes. The free-size cut sits true to size with a relaxed, open drape.

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.
We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.
