Japanese Denim: The Country That Refused to Modernize Its Looms

A shuttle loom weaves about five metres of fabric an hour. A modern projectile loom does hundreds. When the industry switched over in the 1950s, the old machines were obsolete on every measure that mattered to an accountant — slower, narrower, harder to maintain, needing operators who understood them personally.

Japan kept them running. Not out of nostalgia, and not because it could not afford the new ones. Mills in one district of Okayama worked out that the defects of the old looms — the uneven tension, the slubs, the narrow cloth — were the entire reason old American jeans looked the way they did. Sixty years later, Japanese denim is the global benchmark for a garment Japan did not invent, and the reason is a decision to stay slow.

What Is Japanese Denim?

Japanese denim is cotton twill woven in Japan, overwhelmingly in Okayama Prefecture, on narrow vintage shuttle looms run at low tension, and dyed with indigo using the rope method. The output is denser, more textured and more irregular than industrially produced denim, and it is engineered — deliberately — to look better after two years of wear than it does new.

Three Things That Define It

The loom is the first. Vintage Toyoda shuttle looms, many built between the 1920s and the 1960s, weaving cloth around 30 to 32 inches wide with a self-finished edge. The dye is the second: rope dyeing, which loads indigo onto the outside of the yarn and leaves the core white. The cotton is the third — long-staple fibre selected for how it takes dye and how it slubs.

None of these is exclusive to Japan in principle. What is distinctly Japanese is the decision to keep all three at their least efficient settings on purpose.

Selvedge, Raw and Japanese Are Not Synonyms

Three terms get used interchangeably and should not be. Selvedge describes the weave — cloth with a self-finished edge, produced on a shuttle loom. Raw describes the finish — denim that left the mill unwashed and undistressed. Japanese describes where it was woven.

A pair can be any combination. Raw non-selvedge exists. Selvedge that has been pre-distressed at the factory exists. Most high-end Japanese denim happens to be both raw and selvedge, which is why the words blur together in conversation.

How Kojima Became the Denim Capital

The centre of Japanese denim is one district of one city: Kojima, in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. It got there through an accident of agriculture.

Land That Would Not Grow Rice

Kojima was reclaimed land facing the Seto Inland Sea, saline and unsuited to rice. What it would grow was cotton. By the 1930s the district was a centre of Japanese cotton manufacture, producing work clothing, military uniforms and — later — school uniforms.

That is the crucial inheritance. Before Kojima made a single pair of jeans it had spinning, weaving, sewing and, above all, decades of institutional knowledge about dyeing heavy cotton twill blue. The indigo dyeing tradition that supplied it goes back centuries further.

Jeans Arrive Second-Hand

Denim entered Japan on American bodies. Servicemen stationed after the war sold their Levi's into the black markets and second-hand stores around bases and in the large cities, and Japanese youth read the fabric as a symbol of the country that had just occupied them — which made it desirable rather than the opposite.

Importers, among them the trading company that would become Big John, began bringing American denim in commercially. Then the manufacturers decided to make it themselves. The same encounter produced the other Japanese garment built out of the American occupation — the embroidered sukajan souvenir jacket, stitched for departing servicemen in the port towns.

KD-8 and the M-Series

Two milestones matter. In the 1960s and 1970s, Kurabo of Kurashiki developed KD-8, a domestically produced selvedge denim fabric — the point at which Japan stopped depending on imported cloth. And in 1973, Big John released the M-series, the first jeans made entirely in Japan from fabric to finish.

Edwin came at it from another direction, pioneering stone-washing techniques that expanded what could be done to denim after it was made. Kojima and its neighbouring districts now account for something on the order of eighty percent of Japan's denim production, and the town has a street of denim shops, a factory museum and a train station decorated in indigo.

The Osaka Five and the Reproduction Obsession

The second act is what turned competent domestic manufacture into a global reputation, and it happened in Osaka rather than Okayama.

Reverse-Engineering the Past

From the late 1970s into the 1980s, a group of small brands — Studio D'Artisan, Denime, Evisu, Full Count and Warehouse, known collectively as the Osaka Five — set about reproducing vintage American jeans with forensic precision. They took apart pre-war Levi's, measured stitch densities, counted the picks per inch, identified the cotton, and rebuilt the fabric on the machines that had originally made it.

The point was not homage. It was correction. Their conclusion was that mid-century American denim had been better than what America was currently producing, and that the specification had been abandoned for reasons of cost. So they rebuilt it — and then, having matched it, kept going past it.

Where It Got Strange

Evisu became the visible face of the movement internationally, its founder hand-painting a seagull motif on the back pockets of each pair. Momotaro built an identity on pink selvedge edges and a pair of painted stripes taken from a battle standard. Others pushed weights and textures to places no workwear manufacturer had ever needed to go.

Selvedge: What the Loom Actually Does

Selvedge is the most used and least understood word in denim. It describes a physical property with mechanical causes.

Self-Edge

The word contracts "self-edge." A shuttle loom passes one continuous weft thread back and forth across the warp, so at each end of every pass the thread turns and comes back. That turn produces a tightly woven, closed edge that cannot fray — the fabric finishes itself, and no overlocking is needed.

A projectile loom instead fires a fresh length of weft across for each row and cuts it, leaving loose ends on both sides that must be secured. The edge is a raw edge. That is the whole difference, and it is why the selvedge line is structural evidence of how cloth was made rather than a decorative stripe.

The Consequences of Being Slow and Narrow

Shuttle looms weave roughly 30 to 32 inches wide against 50 to 60 on modern machines, at something in the order of a fortieth of the speed. Lower tension and narrower width let the weave pack denser per square inch.

They also produce irregularity. Yarn shifts, thickness variations and slubs appear in the cloth because the machine cannot hold perfectly even tension. On a modern loom this would be a defect. On denim it is the mechanism of character: slubs take indigo unevenly and later wear unevenly, producing the vertical high-contrast streaking that collectors look for.

The ID Line

Mills mark their selvedge with a coloured thread woven into the edge — Levi's red line being the famous one — which identifies the producer and appears down the outseam of finished jeans when the cuff is rolled. It is the most quietly boastful detail in menswear.

Rope Dyeing and Why It Fades

The fade is the point of raw denim, and the fade is manufactured at the dyeing stage, long before the garment exists.

How the Yarn Is Dyed

Warp yarns are gathered into thick ropes and passed through a tower of indigo baths, dipped and then lifted into open air between passes so the dye oxidises. The cycle repeats, commonly eight to sixteen times, building colour on the outside of each thread.

Crucially, it does not penetrate. Because indigo is insoluble and each dip deposits only a surface layer, the interior of the yarn stays white. Cut a rope-dyed thread and it is blue on the outside and pale in the middle.

This is the same dip-and-oxidise logic as traditional aizome — the vat chemistry differs, the principle does not.

Why Fades Appear Where They Do

Wear abrades the surface of the yarn and reveals the white core beneath. Because abrasion is concentrated where the body moves, the pattern is predictable: honeycombs behind the knees, whiskers at the hips, wear at the thighs and the wallet, and a general lightening where fabric rubs fabric.

Denim woven from slubby, irregular yarn fades in high contrast because the thick sections stand proud and abrade first. Denim from smooth industrial yarn fades evenly and flatly. The difference in outcome after two years is enormous, and it originates entirely on the loom.

Weft Stays White

One detail explains the whole colour of denim. Only the warp — the lengthwise yarn — is dyed. The weft is left undyed, which is why denim is blue on the face and white on the reverse, and why worn denim goes pale rather than turning another colour.

Reading a Pair: Weight, Raw, Sanforized

Three specifications tell you most of what a pair will be like to own.

Weight

Denim weight is measured in ounces per square yard. Around 10 to 12 oz is standard commercial denim, light and immediately comfortable. Between roughly 13 and 16 oz sits the usual range for Japanese selvedge — substantial, structured, and workable from the first wear. From 17 oz upward is heavyweight territory: stiff enough to stand up on its own initially, slow to break in, and capable of the sharpest fades because there is more surface to abrade.

Heavier is not better. It is a different commitment, and Japanese mills produce the extremes largely because a market exists that wants them.

Raw and Dry

Raw denim leaves the loom unwashed. It has not been softened, distressed or shrunk, and it carries the mill's finish. The appeal is that all subsequent fading records the wearer's own body and habits rather than a factory's simulation of somebody else's.

The trade-off is a break-in period, stiffness at the start, and indigo that transfers to pale furniture and light shoes for the first weeks.

Sanforized or Not

Sanforized denim has been pre-shrunk mechanically and will move very little after washing — buy your size. Unsanforized, sometimes labelled loomstate or shrink-to-fit, will shrink significantly on first soak, typically in the region of five to ten percent, and must be sized up accordingly. Getting this wrong is the single most common costly mistake in buying Japanese denim. The same sizing logic applies to any structured Japanese-style trouser cut from heavy cotton.

The Mills and the Brands

The industry splits into two layers that are frequently confused: the mills that weave the fabric and the brands that cut and sell jeans.

The Mills

Kaihara, Kuroki, Nihon Menpu and Collect are among the names that appear on the back of the tag when a brand wants to signal fabric quality. Most of them supply many labels, including Western brands that never mention where their selvedge came from. The mill, not the brand, determines the character of the cloth.

The Brands

The Japanese denim brands worth knowing split along the same lines. Big John and Betty Smith are the historical Kojima names, the former for its place in the domestic origin story, the latter for being among the oldest jeans factories in the country and now running a museum and workshop. Momotaro, Japan Blue and Kojima Genes operate out of the same district. The Osaka Five continue in various forms. Edwin and Kapital sit alongside them from different directions.

What You Are Paying For

A pair of Japanese selvedge jeans generally runs several times the price of mass-market denim, and the cost is not brand margin. It is loom time — cloth produced at a fortieth of industrial speed on machines that require specialists to keep running, dyed through a dozen passes, and cut and sewn in smaller runs. The garment is doing the same job as any other pair of jeans. It is doing it with two orders of magnitude more labour behind the fabric, which is the same argument that runs through most considered Japanese-style menswear.

Japanese vs American Denim

The comparison is the most common entry point into the subject, and it carries one persistent piece of misinformation.

The Actual Differences

American denim today is overwhelmingly woven on wide projectile looms for speed and yield, in lighter weights, with smoother yarn and more uniform fading. Japanese denim is narrower, slower, denser, generally heavier, and irregular by design. American production optimises for durability at scale; Japanese production optimises for how a garment looks after being destroyed slowly.

Neither is straightforwardly superior. If you want jeans that stay looking as they did when bought, the industrial product does that better.

The Draper Loom Story

The most repeated claim in denim is that Japanese mills bought up the American Draper shuttle looms that Cone Mills and others discarded when they modernised, and that Japanese selvedge is therefore literally woven on American machines.

It is doubtful. Cone Mills has stated that its surplus Draper looms went to scrap rather than export, and researchers who have visited the major Japanese mills report finding Toyoda machines rather than American ones on the floor. Japan had its own loom industry — Toyoda built shuttle looms before it built cars, and the G3 and GL-9 are the machines actually running in Okayama.

The story survives because it is tidy. The reality is less romantic and more interesting: Japan did not inherit America's machines. It kept its own.

A Garment Perfected by Refusing to Improve

Every rational manufacturing decision of the last seventy years points away from the shuttle loom. It is slow, narrow, temperamental and produces cloth with visible flaws. One country declined to make that decision, on the grounds that the flaws were the product. The result is that the definitive version of the most American garment ever made is now woven on a reclaimed salt flat in Okayama, thirty inches at a time.
