The carved bamboo fan that needs no painted leaf
This fan dispenses with paper or fabric entirely — the whole leaf is built from slats of pale, finely fretworked bamboo, each one pierced with a lacy openwork pattern. The decoration is the wood itself, carved and cut so that light filters through the pierced slats when the fan is opened and raised.
The craft is all in the cutting: every slat carries the same fine latticework, and when the fan fans out, the patterns align into a continuous band of openwork across the arc.
