The folding fan brushed with ink bamboo and birds

This fan trades flowers for ink-brushed bamboo. A leaf washed in soft blue-lavender carries dark bamboo stalks and leaves painted in confident sumi-e strokes, with small birds darting across the open sky between them. Mounted on bamboo ribs, it has the calm, scholarly feel of a brush painting.

The brushwork is the appeal: the bamboo is rendered in crisp black ink, its slender leaves catching the eye against the pale ground, while the birds add a sense of movement and air. Bamboo, valued for its strength and flexibility, is a classic subject of ink painting and a quiet emblem of resilience. The birds between the stalks add air and movement to the spare ink scene.

It's a sensu, the classic folding fan: a printed leaf on slim bamboo ribs that pivot from a riveted base, snapping open with a flick and folding flat to carry. Openwork bamboo near the rivet finishes the base.

It works as an accessory on a warm day and as a decorative piece on a stand, where the ink-bamboo scene reads as a small brush painting. The restrained, scholarly motif sets it apart from the floral fans.

Handcrafted on a wood-frame structure and opening to 21 cm high by 38 cm wide, it pairs everyday use with a calm ink scene. A bamboo-and-birds folding fan for anyone drawn to the quiet of sumi-e painting.

The folding fan has long carried the subjects of brush painting, and bamboo is among the most classic of them. The restrained ink scene gives this fan a scholarly calm quite different from the bright florals, which suits it to quieter, more contemplative interiors and to anyone who values suggestion and brushwork over color.

  • Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we want you to know it. Every piece in our collection draws from Japanese culture, design, and street style: from the energy of Tokyo's neighborhoods to the calm of Kyoto's workshops, from the prints of vintage textiles to the silhouettes of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothing designed for daily wear, anywhere in the world.

Our pieces are produced through manufacturing partners in Asia who share our standards for quality and craft. The exact composition of each piece is listed on its product page and inner label.

We don't sell an origin. We share a spirit.
