The yukata patterned in the timeless hemp-leaf star
Few motifs are as quietly meaningful as the asanoha — the 'hemp leaf', a six-pointed geometric star that has decorated Japanese cloth for centuries. Hemp grows fast and straight, so the pattern came to symbolise healthy growth and protection. This traditional men's yukata, asanugi, covers a deep blue-black robe in that interlocking star lattice, with decorated vertical bands running down the front and sleeves.
The geometry is the appeal. The asanoha stars tile evenly across the cloth in a tone-on-tone blue, calm and rhythmic, while the patterned bands add structure and a sense of craft.
