Global Privacy & Cookie Policy

Last updated: May 13, 2026

1. Overview

This Cookie Policy explains how Japan Clothing uses cookies and similar tracking technologies on japan-clothing.com (the "Site"). It complements our Privacy Policy and must be read together with it. The identity and full contact details of the data controller are set out in the final section of this policy.

This policy is established in accordance with article 82 of the French Loi Informatique et Libertés n°78-17 of January 6, 1978 as amended, article 5(3) of European Directive 2002/58/EC ("ePrivacy Directive") as transposed into national law, the European General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation EU 2016/679 — GDPR), the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), and the relevant recommendations of the French data protection authority (CNIL), in particular its September 2020 guidelines and recommendations on cookies and trackers.

2. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device (computer, tablet, smartphone) when you visit a website. They allow the site to recognize your browser, capture certain information, and deliver a smoother browsing experience — remembering your preferences, measuring audience, securing transactions, or providing personalized features.

This policy applies not only to "cookies" in the strict technical sense but also to similar technologies that may be used alongside or instead of cookies, including:

  • Pixel tags and web beacons;
  • Local storage (HTML5 LocalStorage and SessionStorage);
  • Device fingerprinting techniques;
  • Software development kit (SDK) identifiers;
  • Server logs and IP-based identifiers, where used for tracking purposes.

For simplicity, all such technologies are referred to as "cookies" throughout this policy.

3. Categories of Cookies We Use

3.1 Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are essential for the proper functioning of the Site. They cannot be disabled through our system because the Site would not work properly without them. Their use does not require your prior consent, in accordance with article 82 of the Loi Informatique et Libertés.

  • Session cookies (Shopify): identify your browsing session, keep the contents of your cart, ensure secure checkout. Retention: end of session;
  • Authentication cookies: recognize you when logged into a customer account. Retention: up to 30 days;
  • Security cookies: prevent fraudulent activity, detect malicious bots, secure form submissions. Retention: end of session;
  • Preference cookies (functional): store your language, region, and currency preferences for the current session. Retention: up to 13 months.

Legal basis: performance of a contract / legitimate interest (article 6.1.b and 6.1.f of the GDPR). No prior consent required under article 82 of the Loi Informatique et Libertés.

3.2 Analytics Cookies

These cookies help us understand how visitors interact with the Site, so that we can improve user experience, product discovery, and overall performance.

  • Google Analytics (Google LLC, USA): measures page views, traffic sources, user flow, bounce rate, and conversion behavior. IP addresses are anonymized where possible. Cookies set: _ga, _gid, _gat. Retention: up to 26 months;
  • Shopify Analytics (Shopify Inc., Canada): native traffic and conversion analytics built into the e-commerce platform. Retention: up to 13 months.

Legal basis: your consent (article 6.1.a of the GDPR + article 82 of the Loi Informatique et Libertés). You may withdraw your consent at any time. For US visitors: opt-out right under CCPA/CPRA.

3.3 Functional Cookies

These cookies enable enhanced functionality beyond basic browsing.

  • Judge.me (product reviews): stores identifiers to link reviews to products and Customers, displays star ratings, and prevents duplicate review submissions. Retention: up to 13 months.

Legal basis: your consent (article 6.1.a of the GDPR + article 82 of the Loi Informatique et Libertés).

3.4 Marketing and Advertising Cookies

We do not currently deploy advertising cookies on the Site (no Meta Pixel, no TikTok Pixel, no Google Ads remarketing tags are active at the time of writing). Should we introduce such cookies in the future to measure advertising performance or personalize ads on third-party platforms, this policy will be updated and your prior consent will be requested through the cookie banner where required by law.

4. Cookie Consent

If you visit our Site from the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or any other jurisdiction requiring prior consent for non-essential cookies, a cookie consent banner is displayed on your first visit. You may:

  • Accept all cookies — authorize all categories listed above;
  • Reject non-essential cookies — allow only strictly necessary cookies;
  • Customize your preferences — choose category by category.

In accordance with CNIL guidelines, refusing cookies is as easy as accepting them, and your choices are preserved for the period legally permitted.

Withdrawing your consent. You may change your preferences at any time by:

  • Clearing your browser cookies (your preferences will be reset and the banner will reappear on your next visit);
  • Adjusting your browser settings (see section 7 below);
  • Contacting us at support@japan-clothing.com.

Consent records are kept for a maximum of 13 months, in accordance with CNIL recommendations.

5. Cookies and California Residents (CCPA/CPRA)

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), California residents have the right to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information collected through cookies and similar tracking technologies.

We do not sell personal information. If you wish to limit cookie-based tracking on our Site, you may:

  • Use our cookie banner to reject non-essential cookies;
  • Configure your browser to refuse cookies (see section 7);
  • Send a verifiable request to support@japan-clothing.com with "CCPA Cookie Opt-Out" in the subject line.

6. Global Privacy Control (GPC)

The Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a browser-level signal that automatically informs websites of your preference to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information. We honor GPC signals from compatible browsers and treat them as a valid opt-out request under CCPA/CPRA and equivalent state privacy laws (Colorado CPA, Connecticut CTDPA, and others as they recognize GPC).

To enable GPC, install a compatible browser or extension (Firefox, Brave, DuckDuckGo browser, Privacy Badger, and others). When GPC is enabled, no additional opt-out action is required on our Site.

7. How to Manage Cookies in Your Browser

Most modern browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. You can typically:

  • View cookies stored on your device;
  • Block all cookies or specific categories;
  • Delete existing cookies;
  • Set a notification when a cookie is placed.

Important: blocking or deleting cookies may affect some features of the Site, including your ability to place orders, maintain a logged-in session, or use certain interactive elements.

8. Do Not Track (DNT) Signals

Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal to websites. Because there is currently no industry-wide consensus on how to respond to DNT signals, our Site does not automatically respond to them. We instead rely on the more recent Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal (see section 6) for automated opt-out, and on our cookie consent banner for explicit user choices.

9. International Data Transfers

Some of the cookie service providers listed in section 3 (e.g. Google Analytics) are based in the United States or other countries outside the European Economic Area. When personal data collected through cookies is transferred outside the EEA, we rely on appropriate safeguards in accordance with chapter V of the GDPR, including Standard Contractual Clauses, adequacy decisions, and EU-US Data Privacy Framework certifications where applicable. Further details on these safeguards are provided in our Privacy Policy.

10. Your Rights

You have the right to access, rectify, delete, restrict, and object to the processing of personal data collected through cookies, in accordance with the GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other applicable laws. You may also lodge a complaint with the French data protection authority (CNIL) at www.cnil.fr, the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk, or the data protection authority of your country of residence.

Full information on your rights is provided in our Privacy Policy.

11. Updates to This Cookie Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy periodically to reflect changes in the technologies we use, in our service providers, or in legal requirements. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page indicates when changes were last made. Material changes will be communicated through reasonable means (e.g. notice on the Site, updated banner) before taking effect.

12. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

This Cookie Policy is governed by French law. It complements — and does not limit — any mandatory consumer or data protection rights applicable under your local law.

For Customers residing in France, any dispute concerning the interpretation or application of this policy shall, in the absence of an amicable resolution, fall under the jurisdiction of the competent French court applying the rules of article R631-3 of the French Code de la consommation.

For Customers residing outside France, mandatory local consumer protection and data protection rules remain fully applicable. You retain the right to bring proceedings before the courts of your place of residence, before your local data protection authority, or before the French courts.

13. Severability

If any provision of this policy is held to be invalid, illegal, or unenforceable by a competent court or regulatory authority, the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect. The invalid provision shall be deemed replaced by a valid provision reflecting as closely as possible the original intent.

14. Language

This Cookie Policy is drafted in English for the international market served by japan-clothing.com. In the event of a conflict between this version and any translation, the English version shall prevail, except where mandatory consumer or data protection law requires the application of a translated version.
