Bamboo Lantern in White Paper With Green Ink Wash Stalks
Bamboo is one of the oldest subjects of East Asian painting, and one of the first a student of the brush learns. A stalk is drawn in a single stroke, segment by segment, and each leaf in one flick of the wrist, so the plant becomes an exercise in control as much as a picture. In Japan it carries its own meanings. Bamboo bends under snow and springs back, grows straight and stays green all winter, which made it an emblem of resilience and integrity. With pine and plum it forms sho-chiku-bai, the trio of lucky plants seen on New Year decorations.
This bamboo lantern wraps that subject around a sphere. Several stalks rise from the base in shades of green, some sharp and dark, others pale as if seen through mist, and their long leaves cross the white surface in every direction. The painting has the uneven, watery touch of ink wash, so the lantern looks different from each side.
The shade is made of paper stretched over fine horizontal ribs, the construction of the round lanterns hung at summer festivals. It measures 12 in across, 30 cm, opens with a wire expander and hangs from a metal hook. It folds flat when not in use. With a bulb on a pendant cord inside, the white paper diffuses a soft, even light and the green leaves stand out like shadows on a paper screen.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
