A Japanese folding fan with the gods Fujin and Raijin in blue
This Japanese folding fan brings two of the country's oldest deities face to face. On a deep indigo leaf patterned with fine traditional textile motifs, Fujin the wind god — white-skinned, carrying his great wind-bag — surges in from one side, while Raijin the thunder god — fierce and green, ringed by his drums — charges from the other, bold gold characters set between them like a war banner.
Fujin and Raijin are among the most powerful images in Japanese art, most famously painted on a pair of folding screens by Tawaraya Sotatsu in the seventeenth century. As gods of wind and thunder they command the forces of the sky — and there is a quiet wit in placing the wind god on a fan, the very object made to stir a breeze. The result is dynamic, mythological, unmistakably Japanese.
The scene is printed in strong, detailed color across a smooth silk-touch leaf, the two figures balanced left and right around the pivot for a striking symmetry. It's mounted on white-toned bamboo ribs cut with a fine pierced fret and set with a slim rivet, opening to a full, even arc and folding down compactly for carrying.

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
