Fundoshi: the Traditional Japanese Loincloth in Plain Cotton
The fundoshi is the oldest piece of clothing still worn in Japan. It is mentioned in the Nihon Shoki, the chronicle completed in 720, and clay figures from the Kofun period already show it. For more than a thousand years it was simply what men wore underneath, from farmers to court officials, until Western underwear replaced it in the middle of the twentieth century. It never disappeared. It is still tied on for the winter festivals where men carry shrines through the cold, for river and sea purification rites, and by swimmers who keep the old schools of Japanese swimming alive.
This one is a rokushaku fundoshi, the earliest and best-known form. The name means six shaku, an old unit of about 30 cm, and describes what it is: a single long strip of cloth with no seam, no elastic and no fastening. It is passed between the legs, wrapped around the hips and twisted on itself at the back, where the twist holds everything in place. Tied correctly, it stays firm through a full day of movement.
The strip measures 20 cm wide by 280 cm long, about 8 in by 110 in, a generous length that suits most builds and leaves enough cloth for a secure twist. It is woven in plain cotton, which breathes, dries fast and softens with each wash.
Nine versions are available. White is the festival classic. Red, blue, green and black are solid colors, and four prints draw on traditional motifs: three takes on the seigaiha wave in navy, sea blue and red, and a navy grid. Folded flat it takes no more room than a handkerchief, and many wearers keep one for the bath house, the sauna or a festival trip.

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.
We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.
