Japan Flag in Polyester: the Hinomaru in Two Sizes
The Japan flag is among the plainest national designs anywhere: a red disc on a white field and nothing else. In Japan it carries two names, Nisshoki, the sun-mark flag, and far more often Hinomaru, the circle of the sun. The motif is older than the modern state. Sun discs were painted on folding fans and carried on war banners centuries before the design was adopted for merchant ships in 1870, and it only became the national flag by law in 1999. That law fixes the details still used today: proportions of two to three, the disc set dead center, its diameter three fifths of the height.
This version is printed on lightweight polyester, a fabric that lifts in a light breeze and dries fast after rain. The dye goes through the cloth, so the disc shows on both faces, and because the design is symmetrical it reads correctly from either side. A stitched hem runs around the full edge, and two metal grommets on the hoist side take a rope, a pair of clips or two nails in a wall.
Two sizes are available. The 2 x 3 ft flag (60 x 90 cm) suits a bedroom or dorm wall, a classroom, a dojo or a table at a cultural fair. The 3 x 5 ft flag (90 x 150 cm) is the standard size for an outdoor pole, a balcony or a storefront, and the one to choose for a restaurant facade, a festival stand or a stadium.
Hung flat indoors, it works as a graphic piece in its own right, the red disc doing the job of a painting above a desk or a sofa. It sits naturally beside a noren curtain, paper lanterns or a wall of Japanese posters. Outdoors, it flies from any standard pole with clips or rope. The flagpole is not included.

The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
