Japanese Ribbon in Seigaiha, Wave, Cloud and Sakura Patterns
Japanese textiles rely on a small vocabulary of patterns that has barely changed in a thousand years. Each one has a name and a meaning, and each has moved freely from kimono silk to wrapping cloth, paper and ceramics. This Japanese ribbon brings four of them to a narrow woven band, outlined in metallic gold the way printed kimono cottons are.
Seigaiha, "blue sea waves", is the motif of overlapping arcs that look like scales. It stands for calm seas and lasting good fortune, and it comes here in blue, purple, pink and a multicolor version. The rolling waves, in blue, turquoise or red, are drawn in the manner of woodblock prints, with white crests curling at the tip. The clouds, in navy or deep red, are the stylized scrolls found on temple paintings and festival coats. And sakura, cherry blossom, scatters five-petal flowers over pink, cream or red.
The ribbon is a jacquard-woven band with a soft hand, firm enough to hold a bow and supple enough to be sewn flat. It comes in three widths: 0.4 in (10 mm) for fine trims and bookmarks, 1 in (25 mm) for hair bows and gift wrap, and 1.6 in (40 mm) for bag straps, belts and wide borders. Each length measures 5 yards, about 4.5 m, which is enough for several projects.
Uses are easy to find. Sew it along the edge of a tote bag, a pouch or a cushion. Add a border to a plain kimono jacket collar or a pair of jeans. Make hair bows, key fobs or a pet collar. Tie it around a gift wrapped in a furoshiki, or around a box of sweets. Quilters and bookbinders use this kind of Japanese ribbon for bindings and page markers.

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.
We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.
