Kung Fu Shoes in Black Canvas With a Rubber Sole
Kung fu shoes are about as simple as footwear gets: a black cloth upper, a thin flat sole and nothing else. They come from the martial arts halls of China, where the same slipper has been worn for generations to practice forms, tai chi and footwork, and they have long since crossed into everyday dress across East Asia. The reason is the same on the training floor and on the street. A shoe this light and this flexible lets the foot feel the ground.
This pair keeps the traditional shape and updates what touches the pavement. The upper is black canvas, cut low on the instep with elastic gussets at the sides, so the shoe slips on in one motion and stays put without laces. Inside, a pale perforated lining lets air circulate. The sole is grooved rubber with a stitched white edge, the line that gives kung fu shoes their unmistakable profile, and it bends fully in the hand, from toe to heel.
On the mat, that flexibility is the point: the foot can pivot, slide and root without the stiffness of a sneaker. Off the mat, the same qualities make it an easy summer shoe, one that packs flat in a bag, weighs almost nothing and dries quickly after a summer shower.
Black canvas goes with nearly everything in a Japanese-inspired wardrobe. Wear them with wide hakama-style pants, a jinbei set or shinobi pants for a look built on clean lines, or with cropped trousers and bare ankles in warm weather. They are sized in EU numbers from 35 to 45 and fit true to size. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one, since canvas does not stretch the way leather does.
Features:
- Upper: black canvas, elastic side gussets
- Lining: perforated canvas
- Sole: grooved rubber with stitched white edge
- Slip-on, no laces
- Sizes: EU 35 to 45, true to size
- For martial arts practice and everyday wear

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.
We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.
