Maki Pillow: a Round Sushi Roll Wrapped in Nori

Maki means rolled, and the maki roll is the form of sushi most people learn first: a sheet of toasted seaweed, a layer of vinegared rice, a strip of filling, all rolled tight in a bamboo mat and cut into rounds. It has been made this way since the Edo period, and the cut face of each round, a white ring of rice around a colored center, is one of the most recognizable images in Japanese food. This maki pillow is one of those rounds, scaled up to a cushion.

The side is wrapped in nori, printed in a deep green-black with the fine, uneven texture of real dried seaweed. The top shows the cut: a wide band of rice with every grain drawn, and in the middle a wedge of orange salmon beside a slice of green and yellow avocado. The contrast between the dark wrapper and the bright center is what makes the pillow work from a distance.

It is about 16 in across, 40 cm, and cut round like the roll itself. The design is printed front and back on a soft micro plush fabric, and the filling is a springy polyester fiber that holds the drum shape without going hard. It works as a cushion behind the back, as a small pouf for the feet, or simply as an object on a shelf.

Its dark color makes the maki pillow the easiest sushi cushion to place. It sits well on a light sofa, a beige armchair or a wooden bench, where a brighter pillow might clash. It pairs naturally with the nigiri pillows of the same series, and a roll with two or three nigiri beside it makes a full plate. It suits a living room, a studio, a dorm or the waiting area of a Japanese restaurant.

Good to know

  • Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

  • Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.

A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:

    • Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
    • Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
    • Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
    • Do not bleach
    • Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
    • Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
    • For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first

Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

  • Delivery. We ship worldwide, directly from our manufacturing partners in Asia. Most orders arrive within 7–15 business days, depending on where you are. If your order hasn't arrived within 30 days, we'll make it right — a full refund or a replacement, your call.

Tracking. As soon as your order ships, you'll get an email with a tracking link, so you can follow your package the whole way. Lost track of it? Email support@japan-clothing.com and we'll check for you.

Returns. You have 30 days from delivery to return an item for a full refund, exchange or store credit. Returns are free worldwide — we cover the return shipping. Just email us and we'll send you a prepaid label.

  • All prices include taxes — what you see is what you pay, with nothing added at checkout. Import duties are handled on our end, so for the vast majority of orders you won't pay a thing on delivery. And in the rare case a fee does slip through, we cover it — just email support@japan-clothing.com and we'll take care of it.

  • Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.

The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.

We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.

  • When you order from Japan Clothing, here's what you can count on:

    • Transparent pricing. All prices include taxes — no hidden fees, no surprises at delivery.
    • Quality guaranteed. If a piece arrives damaged, defective or not as described, we'll replace it or refund you in full.

    • Privacy respected. Your personal data stays with us. We never sell, share or rent it — full details in our Privacy Policy.

If anything feels off with your order or your experience, email support@japan-clothing.com — we'll make it right.
