Maneki Neko Keychain: the Lucky Cat as a Charm
The maneki neko, the beckoning cat, has sat in the windows of Japanese shops since the Edo period. One raised paw calls in customers or good fortune, depending on which paw it is, and the figure is so tied to the idea of luck that it now appears on everything from savings boxes to shrine charms. This maneki neko keychain shrinks it to the size of a coin and puts it on a clasp, so it can travel instead of waiting on a shelf.
The cat is a small rounded figure in metal with a glossy enamel finish. Its face is painted in white with pointed red ears and closed, smiling eyes, and its belly carries the kanji 福, fuku, good fortune, between sprays of blossoms. A gold-tone oval tag hangs beside it, printed with two characters that read as an invitation to wealth. The whole piece measures about 6 cm from clasp to base, roughly 2.4 in, and weighs 12 g, light enough to forget on a set of keys.
The clasp is a gold-tone swivel hook that opens with one finger. It clips onto a key ring, the zipper of a bag, a backpack strap, a pencil case or an earbud case, and the swivel keeps the charm from twisting the ring it hangs on.
Six colors are available, and in Japan the color of a lucky cat is rarely chosen at random. White is the classic all-round good luck. Gold calls for money and success in business. Red is the old protective color, pink is tied to love, and the two blues, light and dark, are the ones given to students and travelers. That makes it an easy small gift: for a new job, a new set of house keys, a first car or an exam season.

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.
We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.
