White Japanese Tabi Socks With Split Toe for Sandals and Kimono
The split between the big toe and the rest is not a style decision. It exists because zōri and geta are held on by a single thong that passes between those two toes, and a closed sock makes them unwearable. Everything else about tabi socks follows from that one constraint — including the fact that Japan has been making them since at least the Heian period, several centuries before anyone in Europe put a division in a stocking.
White is the formal register, and it is not interchangeable. Shiro tabi are what gets worn with a ceremonial kimono, at a tea gathering, on a nō stage, at weddings and at funerals. The color carries a specific meaning tied to ritual cleanliness: shoes come off at the threshold, and what touches the tatami has to be visibly clean. Indigo and black exist too, but they belong to travel, work and the everyday — never to the occasion.
These white tabi socks are cut crew-height in a soft knit, unisex, in one size that fits most adult feet. The knit is breathable and treated to resist odor, which matters more than it sounds: tabi are worn against bare skin inside sandals, with no shoe to absorb anything. The split is knitted rather than sewn in, so there is no seam sitting between the toes.
Anyone shopping for cotton tabi socks should note the blend here is knit for stretch and recovery rather than pure cotton, which is what keeps one size working across a range of feet. They work with geta sandals and zōri exactly as intended, under a kimono jacket or a full kimono, and equally well on their own with flip-flops or split-toe boots — which is how most people outside Japan end up wearing them. Machine washable, cool water, and they will hold their shape longer if you skip the dryer.

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.
We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.
