Full-Size Red Lacquer Samurai Armor With Gold Crest and Crescent Kabuto

Red armor has a documented history of being worn on purpose by units that wanted to be identified. The best-known example is the Ii clan's red regiment, whose entire force went into the field lacquered scarlet — a decision that was tactical as much as decorative, since a solid block of red told everyone on the field, friend and enemy, exactly who had arrived.

Akakō means red radiance, and the name is doing honest work. The is finished in deep lacquered crimson with a gold diamond mon at the chest, the kabuto carries a golden crescent maedate, and the whole silhouette is laced in black cord that pulls the red forward rather than competing with it.

Lacquer was the practical answer to a wet climate. Layer after layer of it sealed iron and leather against rain and salt, and the color was mixed into the final coats — so the finish that reads as decoration was, first, the thing keeping the plates alive. This suit is built the same way in appearance: shaped plates, hand lacing, and a finish applied over the whole structure rather than painted on.

Sixteen kilograms, cut for a wearer between 165 and 175 cm, and supplied with a wooden display box. Sizing and certain details can be adapted on request before the piece goes into production, and a full photo dossier can be sent by email beforehand.

The red also had a psychological function that commanders wrote about openly. A unit in matching scarlet was harder to count and harder to break, because individual losses were less visible inside a solid mass of color. Uniformity was the tactic; the striking appearance was a byproduct that later centuries chose to remember instead.

Good to know

  • Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

  • Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.

A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:

    • Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
    • Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
    • Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
    • Do not bleach
    • Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
    • Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
    • For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first

Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

  • Delivery. We ship worldwide, directly from our manufacturing partners in Asia. Most orders arrive within 7–15 business days, depending on where you are. If your order hasn't arrived within 30 days, we'll make it right — a full refund or a replacement, your call.

Tracking. As soon as your order ships, you'll get an email with a tracking link, so you can follow your package the whole way. Lost track of it? Email support@japan-clothing.com and we'll check for you.

Returns. You have 30 days from delivery to return an item for a full refund, exchange or store credit. Returns are free worldwide — we cover the return shipping. Just email us and we'll send you a prepaid label.

  • All prices include taxes — what you see is what you pay, with nothing added at checkout. Import duties are handled on our end, so for the vast majority of orders you won't pay a thing on delivery. And in the rare case a fee does slip through, we cover it — just email support@japan-clothing.com and we'll take care of it.

  • Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.

The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.

We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.

  • When you order from Japan Clothing, here's what you can count on:
