The rising sun over Fuji, embroidered with the lettering
The name "land of the rising sun" comes from a seventh-century diplomatic letter. In 607 the prince regent Shōtoku wrote to Emperor Yang of China describing himself as the ruler of the land where the sun rises, addressing the ruler of the land where the sun sets. The exchange is recorded in the Chinese Sui Shu chronicles, and it reflects simple geography: Japan lies east of the Asian mainland, which is where the sun came up as far as the continent was concerned.
The country's own name carries it still. Nihon (日本), or Nippon, is built from two characters meaning origin (本) and sun (日) — the origin of the sun. The national flag, the hinomaru (日の丸, "sun circle"), states the same thing in its most reduced form: a deep red disc on white, the sun coming up over the horizon. Formalised in 1870, it descends from much older solar imagery in Japanese textile and classical art.
The embroidery works that imagery in three parts: a stylized red sun drawn in parallel horizontal bands, in the graphic register of 1980s Japanese poster design, above the deep blue silhouette of Mount Fuji, anchored by JAPAN in navy capitals with the line "THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN" set discreetly beneath. A few strokes carrying the whole visual identity of the country.
The mid-profile bucket shape sharpens the three colors — red disc, blue mountain, pale blue lettering. Wear it with a heavyweight white tee, straight jeans and low-profile sneakers for a minimal read, or with an oversized navy sweatshirt and cream chinos for something calmer. The brim earns its place on long sightseeing days. Made for people planning a first trip, for anyone following Japanese heritage labels, and for people who want the reference stated plainly.

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.
We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.
