Goldfish Lantern in Green Paper, a Symbol of Japanese Summer

In Japan, the goldfish belongs to summer. It arrived from China in the sixteenth century as a luxury for wealthy merchants, and by the Edo period street sellers carried tubs of them through the cities, calling out their price. Watching a red fish turn in clear water was thought to cool the mind in the heat. The idea has lasted: kingyo still decorate summer kimono, paper fans and wind chimes, and no festival is complete without kingyo sukui, the game of scooping live goldfish with a paper net.

This goldfish lantern shows a single large fish swimming across a green sphere. It is painted in orange and gold with loose, wet strokes, its body round, its tail spreading into long veils that curl around the side of the shade. Against the soft green ground, the color of pond water, the fish seems to move as the lantern turns on its hook.

The shade is made of paper over fine horizontal ribs, in the manner of the globes hung at night festivals. It measures 12 in across, 30 cm, opens with a wire expander, hangs from a metal hook and folds flat afterward. With a bulb on a pendant cord or a small LED inside, the green paper lights up and the fish glows like a real one caught in a ray of sun.

Hang the goldfish lantern on a covered porch, in a sunroom or above a table for a summer dinner. Indoors, it suits a child's room, a bathroom corner, a kitchen or a hallway that needs color. Sushi bars, ramen shops and tea rooms use it to bring a festival mood to the ceiling, and it mixes well with plain globes in white, red or green.

The goldfish is also a sign of abundance and good luck, which makes this lantern an easy present. Keep it away from rain, as with all paper shades.

Good to know

  • Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

  • Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.

A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:

    • Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
    • Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
    • Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
    • Do not bleach
    • Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
    • Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
    • For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first

Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

  • Delivery. We ship worldwide, directly from our manufacturing partners in Asia. Most orders arrive within 7–15 business days, depending on where you are. If your order hasn't arrived within 30 days, we'll make it right — a full refund or a replacement, your call.

Tracking. As soon as your order ships, you'll get an email with a tracking link, so you can follow your package the whole way. Lost track of it? Email support@japan-clothing.com and we'll check for you.

Returns. You have 30 days from delivery to return an item for a full refund, exchange or store credit. Returns are free worldwide — we cover the return shipping. Just email us and we'll send you a prepaid label.

  • All prices include taxes — what you see is what you pay, with nothing added at checkout. Import duties are handled on our end, so for the vast majority of orders you won't pay a thing on delivery. And in the rare case a fee does slip through, we cover it — just email support@japan-clothing.com and we'll take care of it.

  • Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.

The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.

We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.

  • When you order from Japan Clothing, here's what you can count on:
