Onigiri Pillow: the Japanese Rice Ball With a Smile
The onigiri is older than sushi and far more common. It is a handful of plain rice pressed into a triangle around a salty filling, pickled plum, grilled salmon, kelp, and wrapped in a sheet of seaweed so it can be held without sticky fingers. Court diaries of the Heian period already describe rice balls handed out at gatherings, and today every convenience store in Japan sells them by the shelf. It is the country's packed lunch, its travel snack and its comfort food.
This onigiri pillow gives the rice ball a face. The body is the classic rounded triangle, printed in white with the soft texture of pressed rice. At the base sits the square of nori, black and matte, exactly where a hand would hold it. And above it, two round eyes, a small curved smile and a touch of pink on each cheek turn the snack into a character.
The pillow is about 16 in tall, 40 cm, which makes it a real pillow rather than a desk toy. It is printed front and back on micro plush fabric with a short, velvety pile, and filled with polyester fiber that springs back when you lean on it. The triangle shape props itself upright against the back of a sofa or a headboard.
The white, black and pink palette of the onigiri pillow goes with almost any room, and the face gives it more warmth than a plain cushion. It suits a child's bed, a teenager's desk chair, a reading corner or a couch that needs one friendly object. It also pairs well with the sushi pillows of the same series, where it plays the part of the mascot. As a gift, it works for anyone who has ever come back from Japan talking about convenience store rice balls.

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.
We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.
