Uramaki Pillow: an Inside-Out Roll Crowned With Salmon Roe
Most sushi rolls hide their rice inside a sheet of seaweed. The inside-out roll does the opposite: rice on the outside, filling at the center, and whatever the chef wants to show off laid on top. In Japanese it is called uramaki, and it is the style that carried sushi far beyond Japan, because it puts color first. This uramaki pillow takes one slice of that roll and makes it big enough to sit on a sofa.
Seen from the front, it is a cube of white rice with a bright cross-section at its heart: green avocado and yellow omelet, cut clean. A thick slice of orange salmon is folded over the top like a blanket, marked with the pale lines of the fish. And on the very top sits a cluster of ikura, salmon roe, drawn as a handful of glossy red pearls that stand up from the cushion in soft relief.
The pillow measures about 16 in, 40 cm, at its widest. Its design is printed on both faces of a micro plush fabric with a short, velvety pile, the same kind used for soft toys, and it is filled with polyester fiber that springs back after a squeeze. The edges are closed with a hidden seam, so nothing interrupts the print.
The uramaki pillow is the most colorful piece of the sushi set, which makes it the one to choose if the room needs a single accent. Put it on a neutral sofa, a bed or a reading chair and it does the work of a painting. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
