Black hakama legs cut by a single wine-red tie
Almost all black, until your eye drops to the waist — where a wine-red sash runs straight down the front and changes the whole read. One band of color against a wall of black is all it takes to turn volume into something deliberate.
The body is the full hakama move: an elastic waist opening into two vast, fluid legs that fall to the ankle and swing like panels when you walk. It's a cotton-and-polyester blend in matte black with no sheen, dyed to stay deep, so the silhouette stays graphic rather than glossy.
The tie is where the work is. A deep burgundy sash, plain and slightly heathered, hangs down the front, and near each tail sits a small white embroidered gourd — the hyotan, a long-standing Japanese good-fortune motif. Two pale shapes on red on black: a three-color hit in an otherwise monochrome piece, and the only ornament the design allows itself. The sash can hang long or tuck shorter, so the length of that red line is yours to set.
Keep the top half plain — a white or black tee lets the pants and that red line do everything — and finish with low sneakers. Sizes run through to 3XL, the elastic waist stretching the range. We recommend choosing one size up from your usual size to get the wide, draping fall these are built around.
