A koi pond seen from above, embroidered as a medallion

Breeding koi (錦鯉, nishikigoi) is among the most codified pastimes in Japanese horticultural culture. It began in the Niigata region in the early nineteenth century, selecting and crossing ornamental carp for the most striking coats. Around a hundred varieties are officially recognized: kohaku, white with red, the most prestigious; taishō sanke, white with red and black; shōwa sanshoku; asagi, with blue scales; ōgon, wholly metallic; and kumonryū, black and white in cloud-like patterns that change with the seasons.

The national koi shows — the All Japan Combined Nishikigoi Show above all — draw hundreds of breeders and exhibitors every year, and a single champion fish can change hands for hundreds of thousands of dollars at the annual sales. The record is held by S Legend, a female kohaku sold in 2018 for a figure well over a million euros. That economy of prestige makes koi the aquatic equivalent of bonsai: a living thing raised over decades toward a demanding aesthetic.

The embroidered medallion takes an unusual angle — a pond seen from directly above. Koi of several varieties, red-and-white kohaku, orange-and-white, black-and-white bekko and grey, circle a central whirlpool in an arrangement that reads almost as a mandala. A white lotus floats at the lower edge, carrying the grammar of temple ponds. Overhead perspective is rare in embroidered work, and it is what makes this one hold the eye.

The mid-profile bucket shape makes the reds, oranges and blacks vibrate around the center. Wear it with an oversized black sweatshirt, technical trousers and chunky sneakers, or with a haori and a heavyweight white tee for something more deliberate. The brim earns its place in gardens and on pond paths. Made for people who keep koi, who visit the shows, and who look at textile work properly.

Good to know

  • Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

  • Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.

A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:

    • Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
    • Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
    • Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
    • Do not bleach
    • Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
    • Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
    • For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first

Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

  • Delivery. We ship worldwide, directly from our manufacturing partners in Asia. Most orders arrive within 7–15 business days, depending on where you are. If your order hasn't arrived within 30 days, we'll make it right — a full refund or a replacement, your call.

Tracking. As soon as your order ships, you'll get an email with a tracking link, so you can follow your package the whole way. Lost track of it? Email support@japan-clothing.com and we'll check for you.

Returns. You have 30 days from delivery to return an item for a full refund, exchange or store credit. Returns are free worldwide — we cover the return shipping. Just email us and we'll send you a prepaid label.

  • All prices include taxes — what you see is what you pay, with nothing added at checkout. Import duties are handled on our end, so for the vast majority of orders you won't pay a thing on delivery. And in the rare case a fee does slip through, we cover it — just email support@japan-clothing.com and we'll take care of it.

  • Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.

The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.

We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.

  • When you order from Japan Clothing, here's what you can count on:

    • Transparent pricing. All prices include taxes — no hidden fees, no surprises at delivery.
    • Quality guaranteed. If a piece arrives damaged, defective or not as described, we'll replace it or refund you in full.

    • Privacy respected. Your personal data stays with us. We never sell, share or rent it — full details in our Privacy Policy.
