Shrine steps under blossom, with two cats, embroidered as a patch
Shrine approaches — sandō (参道, "the visiting path") — structure how you arrive at a Shinto shrine. Traditionally built in stone, lined with granite votive lanterns and planted with cherry or maple depending on the region, these paths exist to prepare the visitor rather than to move them efficiently. Several are famous for their scale: Konpira-san on Shikoku runs to 1,368 steps, Yamadera in the Tōhoku to 1,015.
The presence of cats at Japanese shrines is a quieter tradition and less written about. Many Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines keep semi-feral colonies fed by the monks and by visitors, in a habit of animal tolerance that goes back to the arrival of cats from China in the sixth century. Tashirojima in the Tōhoku, nicknamed the cat island, has more cats than residents, and several Kyoto shrines are known locally as cat shrines.
The rectangular patch reproduces a quiet scene: green-grey stone steps climbing toward a shrine roof in red and pink, partly visible at the top left, surrounded by cascading pink cherry blossom. Two orange and white cats occupy the foreground — one climbing the steps, one sitting below in the planting. It is a shrine out of season, before the crowds, which is when they are worth seeing.
The mid-profile bucket shape lifts the color of the patch — pink blossom, red roof, green planting, orange cats. Wear it with an oversized black sweatshirt, cargo trousers and chunky sneakers, or with a contemporary haori and a heavyweight tee. The brim earns its place on long shrine days in Kyoto, Nara and Kamakura. Made for people who like cats, who walk to shrines rather than take the bus, and who prefer a piece that tells a scene.

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.
We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.
