Two sushi in a hug, embroidered kawaii
The kawaii aesthetic — 可愛い, literally "cute" — has shaped a large part of Japan's contemporary visual culture since the 1970s. It began with schoolgirls writing in a rounded, deliberately childlike hand, and was then institutionalised through character companies: Sanrio, which created Hello Kitty in 1974, and San-X, behind Rilakkuma and Sumikko Gurashi. The merchandise that followed now accounts for tens of billions of yen in the Japanese creative economy.
Giving food a face — eyes, arms and a mood attached to a piece of sushi, an onigiri or a takoyaki — is one of the most widespread kawaii grammars. Its roots run back to the yōkai of Japanese folklore, creatures able to take the shape of objects, and to a very old habit of humanising everyday things. Several food characters have become commercial stars in their own right: Gudetama, Sanrio's permanently exhausted egg, and the tofu-and-tonkatsu cast of Sumikko Gurashi.
The embroidery stages two sushi holding on to each other: on the left an orange salmon nigiri with its eyes closed in a laughing arc, on the right a white rice ball wearing the same expression. A single blue band runs across both, tying them together like two figures mid-embrace. There is no scenery at all, which leaves everything to the pair — a design that would work just as well as a messaging sticker.

The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
