Tokyo in vintage script, embroidered over the kanji
Cursive script lettering has been back in streetwear since the early 2010s. The style descends from American commercial signage of the 1940s and 1950s and from vintage sporting logos — baseball clubs, college teams — and it carries a nostalgia that has proved unusually durable. Several major Japanese labels working in varsity and college wear have built entire collections on that lettering.
The connection between Japan and America here is historical rather than decorative. During the occupation years from 1945 to 1952, tens of thousands of American servicemen stationed across the country moved American popular culture into it — music, clothing, sport. Baseball, college basketball, jukeboxes, diners and neon signage lodged themselves in the postwar Japanese imagination and never left. What came out of it is the Japanese Americana still visible in Harajuku and Shimokitazawa today.
The embroidery handles that vintage grammar well: Tokyo set in thick blue cursive with the thick-and-thin strokes of mid-century industrial script, small starbursts to the right, and beneath it the two kanji 東京 in bright red. Western cursive above, Japanese characters below — the design says the whole exchange in one mark.
The mid-profile bucket shape makes the blue script carry. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
