Tokyo in varsity capitals, embroidered over the kanji
Varsity lettering comes out of American universities in the 1920s. College teams — football, baseball, basketball — settled on a recognisable typographic style: heavy sans-serif capitals, slightly curved, with squared terminals and proportions built to be read from the back of a stand. It became inseparable from the varsity jacket, the boiled-wool and leather piece that still says "campus" faster than any other garment.
The collegiate look was imported into Japan on a large scale from the 1960s, in the wake of the American occupation and the cultural fascination that followed it. Several major Japanese labels made the vocabulary their own, and the Japanese-American subculture now produces some of the most sought-after vintage in the world — from embroidered sukajan to genuine imported college sweatshirts.
The embroidery works that varsity grammar in two strong colors: TOKYO in large red capitals outlined in navy for legibility, set on the subtle arc that every American college logo uses. Below it, the kanji 東京 stitched in heavy navy. Western collegiate type above, Japanese characters underneath — the exchange stated in one mark.
The mid-profile bucket shape makes the red and navy carry. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
