The Great Wave under a red sun, embroidered in a medallion

Ukiyo-e — literally "pictures of the floating world" — is the movement that dominated Japanese visual culture between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Printed from carved woodblocks, these images answered enormous popular demand: portraits of kabuki actors, courtesans of the Yoshiwara district, famous landscapes, scenes of ordinary life. That mass availability made ukiyo-e the most widely circulated art of pre-modern Japan.

Its most famous work remains The Great Wave off Kanagawa, published by Katsushika Hokusai around 1831. A monumental wave with clawed foam is about to come down on three fishing boats while Mount Fuji sits tiny in the background. Thousands of impressions were pulled in Hokusai's own lifetime, and the print went on to shape nineteenth-century French painting — Monet, Van Gogh, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec all collected and studied Japanese prints, in the movement now called Japonisme.

The embroidered medallion pairs the wave with a full red sun rising behind the mass of foam, tightening the composition inside a blue circle. Ukiyo-e grammar meeting the solar disc of the flag: two of the country's most legible visual symbols compressed into one image. The circular format recalls the shuin seals that pilgrims collect at shrines.

The mid-profile bucket shape sharpens the red, white and blue by contrast. Wear it with an oversized black sweatshirt, technical trousers and chunky sneakers, or with a heavyweight white tee, linen shorts and sandals for a summer read. The brim is welcome by the sea, in parks and on museum days. Made for people who collect Japanese prints and for anyone who studies where they came from.

Good to know

  • Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

  • Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.

A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:

    • Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
    • Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
    • Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
    • Do not bleach
    • Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
    • Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
    • For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first

Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

  • Delivery. We ship worldwide, directly from our manufacturing partners in Asia. Most orders arrive within 7–15 business days, depending on where you are. If your order hasn't arrived within 30 days, we'll make it right — a full refund or a replacement, your call.

Tracking. As soon as your order ships, you'll get an email with a tracking link, so you can follow your package the whole way. Lost track of it? Email support@japan-clothing.com and we'll check for you.

Returns. You have 30 days from delivery to return an item for a full refund, exchange or store credit. Returns are free worldwide — we cover the return shipping. Just email us and we'll send you a prepaid label.

  • All prices include taxes — what you see is what you pay, with nothing added at checkout. Import duties are handled on our end, so for the vast majority of orders you won't pay a thing on delivery. And in the rare case a fee does slip through, we cover it — just email support@japan-clothing.com and we'll take care of it.

  • Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.

The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.

We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.

  • When you order from Japan Clothing, here's what you can count on:
