Butterfly Traditional Japanese Pajamas with Ink-Drawn Peony and Wrap Top

Chouka means butterfly-flower — chou for the butterfly, ka for the flower it lands on, a compound that runs through old Japanese poetry. The set carries it. A pale beige double-gauze ground holds peonies and butterflies drawn in ink-grey lines, the way old sumi-e brushwork handled a single subject — restrained marks, plenty of empty space, every line earning its place. The slate blue trim at the V-collar pulls the composition together. There is more air than image on the fabric, and that is the point.

The cut follows a wrap silhouette: a V-collar top with a slate blue placket and self-tie at the side, three-quarter sleeves, a clean back. The trousers are straight-cut with an elastic waist, falling to the ankle, carrying the same ink-drawn peony print across the fabric. Double-gauze cotton softens with every wash and gains its full hand after a few cycles. Sizes run M, L and XL; the cut is loose enough to layer, fitted enough to wear out of the house.

You get the wrap top and matching printed trousers, packaged plainly. Double gauze is the fabric Japanese mothers cut into baby blankets and summer towels — designed to absorb, breathe, soften. No costume packaging, no plastic accessory clutter, no fake silk gloss. Just two pieces of textile made for skin and slow days.

Wear it as nightwear in warmer months, as loungewear, as a quiet outfit for the kind of day that doesn't need anything more. The top works alone over white jeans, the trousers alone with a plain tank. It pairs with bare feet, with leather slippers, with espadrilles when the air turns warmer. There are two Japans in every wardrobe; this one leans toward the contemplative side — temple gardens, sumi-e ink, the slower months. Free standard delivery.

  • Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we want you to know it. Every piece in our collection draws from Japanese culture, design, and street style: from the energy of Tokyo's neighborhoods to the calm of Kyoto's workshops, from the prints of vintage textiles to the silhouettes of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothing designed for daily wear, anywhere in the world.

Our pieces are produced through manufacturing partners in Asia who share our standards for quality and craft. The exact composition of each piece is listed on its product page and inner label.

We don't sell an origin. We share a spirit.
