The carved bamboo fan that needs no painted leaf
This fan dispenses with paper or fabric entirely — the whole leaf is built from slats of pale, finely fretworked bamboo, each one pierced with a lacy openwork pattern. The decoration is the wood itself, carved and cut so that light filters through the pierced slats when the fan is opened and raised.
The craft is all in the cutting: every slat carries the same fine latticework, and when the fan fans out, the patterns align into a continuous band of openwork across the arc. The natural, blond bamboo tone keeps it warm and organic, a quiet alternative to the bright printed leaves. Run a thumb across the slats and you feel the fretwork as much as see it.
It's a sensu, the classic folding fan, here in its purest all-wood form: the slats pivot from a riveted base and snap open with a flick, folding flat to slip into a bag. The pierced construction also makes it pleasingly light in the hand.
The openwork lets a little more air through as you fan, and the unadorned bamboo suits anyone who prefers natural materials to printed scenes. Open on a stand, the lacy woodwork reads as a piece of craft in its own right.
Handcrafted on a bamboo structure and opening to 21 cm high by 38 cm wide, it celebrates the material itself rather than a painted picture. An all-bamboo folding fan for anyone drawn to natural texture and fine fretwork.
The folding fan has long been prized as much for its craft as its function, and a piece like this puts the making front and center. With no printed scene to admire, the eye goes straight to the cutting itself, the kind of quiet, material beauty that suits a minimalist shelf or a hand that prefers natural texture to bright pattern.

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.
We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.
