The wagara cap with centuries of pattern in plain sight
Wagara are the traditional Japanese patterns — asanoha hemp leaves, seigaiha waves, kikko tortoiseshell — that have decorated kimono, screens and crests for centuries. Each carries quiet meaning: protection, longevity, good fortune, woven into geometry you've seen a hundred times without naming.
This cap stitches a wagara motif on the front, the repeating geometry worked in thread so the pattern holds its precision in relief. It's a design-literate choice, a nod to textile tradition rather than a single obvious icon. The stitch sits raised against the twill, catching light where a flat print would simply lie there dull.
Colorways run Stone, White, Light Blue and Black. Stone and Light Blue keep it soft and traditional; White sharpens the geometry; Black makes it graphic and modern. The cap stays low-profile and unstructured. The pattern runs across the front so the repeat carries rather than sitting as one isolated badge, and the soft low crown keeps the geometry flowing cleanly instead of stiffening up. Each colorway shifts how the geometry reads, the lighter grounds keeping it traditional while the darker ones push it toward something cleaner and more modern.
Build is 100% cotton twill, six embroidered eyelets, adjustable antique-buckle strap for one-size wear. Embroidered, not printed, the pattern keeps its clean repeat through long use.
Once you learn to read wagara, you see them everywhere — on a noodle shop's curtain, a grandmother's kimono, a video game's loading screen. This cap is a small entry into that visual literacy, a pattern with centuries behind it worn by someone who knows it's more than decoration. Centuries of meaning folded into geometry you've seen a hundred times — now worn by someone who finally knows its name. The cotton twill keeps the repeat flat and precise, the stitched eyelets keep it breathable, and the soft crown means the pattern sits clean and uncreased through a full day of wear.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we want you to know it. Every piece in our collection draws from Japanese culture, design, and street style: from the energy of Tokyo's neighborhoods to the calm of Kyoto's workshops, from the prints of vintage textiles to the silhouettes of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothing designed for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
Our pieces are produced through manufacturing partners in Asia who share our standards for quality and craft. The exact composition of each piece is listed on its product page and inner label.
We don't sell an origin. We share a spirit.
