Japanese Restaurant Lantern With a Red Crab and Kani Calligraphy
Restaurants in Japan tend to do one thing. A shop serves eel, or soba, or grilled chicken, or crab, and it says so on the lantern outside. The specialty is written in a few brush strokes, large enough to be read from the end of the street, and the customer knows what the kitchen does before pushing the curtain aside. Crab houses are among the most recognizable of all, from the winter ports of the Sea of Japan to the famous giant crab sign above Dotonbori in Osaka.
This Japanese restaurant lantern belongs to that family. A red crab, drawn with a loose brush and its claws raised, fills the upper part of the shade. Under it, two thick black hiragana spell kani, crab. A small boxed label and a round red seal reading shinsen, fresh, complete the composition the way a stamp completes a painting. The palette is the one found on market stalls: black ink, one red, white ground.
The lantern is built like a traditional chochin, with a spiral frame that forms the ribs and black caps at top and bottom. Its shade is a coated fabric, more durable than paper and resistant to the steam and humidity of a kitchen. It hangs by a ring, and a small bulb or LED inside lights the white surface from within.
As a Japanese restaurant lantern, it is made for a seafood counter, a sushi bar, an izakaya or a market stand, alone at the door or in a line above the pass. At home, it suits a kitchen, a dining corner or a covered terrace where shellfish is served in summer. Anyone who has eaten crab in Hokkaido or Kanazawa will recognize it at once.
It is offered in two sizes and folds flat. Several lanterns with different specialties, hung side by side, recreate the look of a Japanese food alley.

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.
We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.
