The kitsune mask cap that brings festival energy to a brim

The kitsune mask — white face, red markings, sharp ears — is a fixture of Japanese festivals and Inari shrine ritual, where the fox serves as messenger to the rice god. Worn at matsuri and woven through folklore, the kitsune is trickster, guardian and shapeshifter all at once.

This cap stitches a kitsune mask on the front in detailed embroidery, the red markings worked against the white face so the mask reads sharp and a little uncanny. It's a folklore piece with edge, for anyone drawn to the spirit side of Japanese tradition. The stitch sits raised against the twill, catching light where a flat print would simply lie there dull.

It comes in Stone, Light Blue, Black and White. Black gives the mask a dramatic, ritual feel; White keeps it clean; Stone and Light Blue soften it. The cap stays unstructured and low-profile. The mask sits centred on the front, the red markings sharp against the white face, and the soft low crown keeps the mood a little theatrical rather than sporty — fitting for a festival motif.

Construction is 100% cotton twill, six embroidered eyelets, adjustable antique-buckle strap for one-size wear. Embroidered, not printed, the mask holds its markings crisp over years.

At a summer matsuri the masked faces drift through the crowd, half-playful and half-eerie, and that's the energy this carries. It's a folklore piece with a bit of edge — chosen by people drawn to the stranger, more theatrical corners of Japanese tradition rather than its postcard side. Half-playful, half-eerie, all festival — for anyone drawn to the stranger corners of the tradition. The cotton twill keeps a clean ground behind the sharp red markings, the stitched eyelets keep it breathable, and the antique buckle finishes the back the way a festival piece with edge should.

Good to know

  • Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

  • Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.

A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:

    • Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
    • Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
    • Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
    • Do not bleach
    • Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
    • Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
    • For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first

Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

  • Delivery. We ship worldwide, directly from our manufacturing partners in Asia. Most orders arrive within 7–15 business days, depending on where you are. If your order hasn't arrived within 30 days, we'll make it right — a full refund or a replacement, your call.

Tracking. As soon as your order ships, you'll get an email with a tracking link, so you can follow your package the whole way. Lost track of it? Email support@japan-clothing.com and we'll check for you.

Returns. You have 30 days from delivery to return an item for a full refund, exchange or store credit. Returns are free worldwide — we cover the return shipping. Just email us and we'll send you a prepaid label.

  • All prices include taxes — what you see is what you pay, with nothing added at checkout. Import duties are handled on our end, so for the vast majority of orders you won't pay a thing on delivery. And in the rare case a fee does slip through, we cover it — just email support@japan-clothing.com and we'll take care of it.

  • Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.

The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.

We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.

  • When you order from Japan Clothing, here's what you can count on:
