Full-Size Blue Samurai Armor With Gold Kuwagata and Lacquered Menpo
Seiryū is the Azure Dragon, guardian of the east in a system of four directional beasts that Japan inherited from China along with the calendar and the writing system. East meant spring, water and beginnings — and blue armor invoking that guardian was a reasonably common choice for a commander who wanted the association without saying anything out loud.
The suit runs deep blue over black. Gold kuwagata horns rise from the kabuto above a black lacquered menpo, a gilt crest sits at the center of the dō between two red silk tassels, and the kusazuri plates hanging over the thighs are laced in dense blue cord with white beading along the rows.
That density is the point of Japanese lamellar construction. Rather than a solid breastplate, the suit is built from hundreds of small plates laced together — heavier than it looks, but able to bend at the waist, the shoulder and the hip in ways that European plate could not. It is why a warrior in full armor could ride, draw a bow and fight on foot in the same afternoon.
About sixteen kilograms, cut for a wearer between 165 and 175 cm, and supplied with a wooden display box. Shaped, laced and finished by hand. Custom sizing and selected details are available on request, and a photo dossier can be sent before you order.
The white beading running along the plate rows is a detail borrowed from higher-grade historical work, where contrasting cord was threaded through selected rows to mark the divisions of the suit. It reads as decoration at a distance and as construction up close, which is the register Japanese armor generally operates in.

Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing — so as a rule, order one size up from your usual size. The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Every product page has its own size chart with exact measurements taken flat, so you can compare against a piece you already own. Still caught between two sizes? Email support@japan-clothing.com and a real person will help you pick the right one.

Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
Treated right, these pieces hold their shape, color and detail wash after wash.

Japan Clothing is inspired by Japan, not made in Japan — and we'd rather you hear it from us. Every piece draws from Japanese culture, design and street style: the energy of Tokyo's backstreets, the calm of a Kyoto workshop, the prints of vintage textiles, the cut of modern streetwear. We translate that inspiration into clothes built for daily wear, anywhere in the world.
The pieces themselves are produced by manufacturing partners in Asia. The exact composition of each one is listed on its product page and printed on the inner label — no guesswork, no fine print.
We don't sell you an origin. We share a spirit.
