The rayed sun is among the most recognisable solar emblems associated with Japan. The version with a red disc and sixteen diverging rays was adopted as a military and naval standard in the late nineteenth century, but the motif itself is far older: radiant suns appear on Edo-period prints and on kamon family crests dating back to the medieval era. The design has a documented history as a state and military emblem, and that history is contested in parts of East Asia — worth knowing rather than glossing over.

The stylized solar motif circulates far beyond that context. It turns up in the iconography of traditional fishing communities, on neighborhood matsuri banners, on sports jerseys, and throughout contemporary Japanese graphic design. Its spread says something about how central the sun is to Japanese visual grammar — the country's own name, 日本, means the origin of the sun.

The rectangular patch on this model works in two layers. A red sun sits at the top, rays fanning outward. Below it a rough sea breaks in white and blue, drawn in the manner made famous by Hokusai — clawed foam, rolling crests, a hard blue-black palette.
