Waves, a pagoda and the sun, embroidered in one medallion
The three-part composition — waves, sacred architecture, sun — draws on visual grammar centuries deep. Those three symbols have structured the collective image of Japan from eighteenth-century ukiyo-e through to contemporary poster design. The wave stands for an island position and the sea that surrounds it; the sacred structure marks spiritual identity; the sun points at the country's own name, 日本, the origin of the sun. Together they are the minimum viable version of Japanese visual identity.
The Japanese pagoda deserves a note of its own. Imported from China in the sixth century, the tō (塔) developed features found nowhere else — above all its earthquake resistance. The five-tier pagoda at Tō-ji in Kyoto, finished in 826, is the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan at 54.8 meters, and has come through repeated destructive earthquakes because of its free-standing central pillar, the shinbashira, which acts as a passive counterweight. The engineers of the Tokyo Skytree studied it.
The embroidered medallion sets that triad inside a framed blue circle: Hokusai-style waves in white and blue running along the bottom, a red tiered pagoda rising behind them like a shrine above the sea, and a red solar disc crowning the whole. It compresses the classical imagery into something that reads instantly, and functions as a mark rather than a picture.

The exceptions are t-shirts and hoodies, which run true to size, so take your usual size for those. Materials vary from piece to piece — some are 100% cotton, others polyester, satin-finish, or a blend, depending on the design. You'll find the exact composition in the product description above, and it's always printed on the inner label of the garment itself. When the two ever differ, trust the label.
A little care goes a long way with these pieces. To keep colors deep and fabric intact:
- Machine wash cold, 30°C / 86°F maximum — heat is what fades and shrinks
- Turn the garment inside out and wash with similar colors
- Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent; skip the fabric softener on printed or embroidered pieces
- Do not bleach
- Hang to dry in the shade — avoid the tumble dryer, which is the fastest way to ruin the fit
- Iron on low heat if needed, and always inside out over prints or embroidery
- For anything delicate or unusual, follow the inner label first
